Unconventional Wedding Cakes

In today’s wedding world, it seems that most wedding cakes are unconventional. It’s almost unconventional to have a white on white wedding cake! But in an unconventional wedding cake might refer to the design, the topper, or the flavors featured. Regarding design, one popular unconventional style today is the topsy turvy, asymmetrical design. Stacked cake layers give the illusion that the cake could spill over any minute, when in fact, the cake is balanced and level. Unconventional toppers are another way that a couple may make their cake unique. The couple who loves Angry Birds, for instance, can feature the adorable characters perched atop their cake. Can’t last a minute without your cell phone? There’s a wedding topper for that, too. Prefer Goth to Victorian? No problem. A talented baker can help you realize your dream cake. But you might opt for traditional design and toppers, and still find ways to be unconventional with flavors – even savory alternatives to wedding cakes, like “cakes” made of wheels of cheese, or layers of savory meet pies, might stand in for a conventional cake. So, express yourselves! In cake! And send us pictures.

Blue Wedding Cake with Fresh Flowers

Today’s featured cake is one of those “wow!” cakes. As in, I said “wow!” as soon as I saw it.

If that’s not a showstopper, I don’t know what is.

This cake is almost over-the-top. It’s just teetering on the edge of “too much” but as a whole, it just works. Read More

Black and White Cake with Flowers

Ah, spring! It’s that time of year when everything is blooming and the flowers are gorgeous. Which means it is a great time to showcase some lovely floral wedding cakes.

I’m a BIG fan of black and white cakes. There is something just so elegant about a black and white cake – even if it’s a white cake with just a hint of black icing or ribbon.

And if you had bright blooms to that cake? Well, that’s just the bees knees. Read More

Pink Wedding Cake with Sprinkles

I love the idea of using sprinkles on a wedding cake, but not everyone is a fan of the tiny candies.

Which is why I love today’s featured cake – it showcases one tier of sprinkles while keeping an elegant and fun vibe.

This three-tier cake might seem a bit “busy” at first glance, but it would be perfect for a spring or summer wedding. Read More

Three-tier Chocolate Wedding Cake

I loooove the idea of serving a chocolate cake at a wedding reception.

It’s becoming THE thing to do – get away from the traditional white wedding cake and serve something a bit different.

Today’s featured cake would be gorgeous any time of year, but I’d love to see it in the early spring when the temperatures are still a bit chilly. Read More

Can you feel it? We’re getting SO close to the first day of spring! I want to celebrate with all kinds of fresh flowers!

Specifically, let’s celebrate with today’s gorgeous “naked” wedding cake topped with a huge bouquet of fresh flowers.

How lovely is this cake?

The single-tier vanilla cake with white icing is rather nondescript on its own. In fact without the flowers it would be kind of boring. Read More

Black Wedding Cake with Cascading White Flowers

It’s not secret that I’m a fan of dark and dramatic wedding cakes – especially those that use black icing.

That is such an unexpected choice for a wedding cake and it’s also perfect when you want to make a statement with your cake.

Of course a dark cake needs something bright to make it pop, and we love the addition of a cascade of bright white blooms. Read More
