While we all love big wedding cakes, there’s something to be said for small cupcakes.

First, everyone loves cupcakes. And, they can be fun and whimsical.

And you can easily add them to a dessert table but still have a small-ish wedding cake for the happy couple to enjoy.

Today’s featured (cup)cake are simple and elegant and would be perfect for a summertime wedding. The cupcakes are topped with gorgeous white icing and presented on a lovely tiered cupcake stand.

But what if you want to serve cupcakes but still have a traditional wedding cake to cut too? Simple – serve both!

This is a fun concept – have a small, one tier wedding cake as the “main” cake – basically for the couple to cut – and then surround it by gorgeous cupcakes.

You can have your cake and eat cupcakes too!

The cupcakes can be assorted flavors – maybe themed to the season (red velvet, spice cake, strawberry). And for an added touch of fun, make sure you have enough so that guests can take one home too. Order some cute Chinese take-out boxes for the cupcakes.

I love the idea of keeping the traditional wedding cake as part of the reception – it is easier to cut a slice of cake than it is to share a cupcake with your new spouse.

But if you could also serve cupcakes – in the same flavor as the mini cake or a variety of flavors – then you’d have the best of both dessert worlds.

This way the cake can be just for the bride and groom and the guests can enjoy cupcakes and perhaps a fun dessert candy bar thrown into the mix. Variety is the spice of  life after all!

And fall means pumpkins! I’m talking pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin pies, pumpkin decorations.

Which is why I love this cake-and-cupcake idea! You can have your cake (and cupcakes) and eat it too.

The happy couple can pick out a small cake in their favorite flavor and it gets top billing on a tiered cupcake stand. I also love the adorable banner that adorns the top of the cake. Very shabby chic.

Then the guests can nosh on some delectable cupcakes in different flavors. No mess, no fuss, no cutting hundreds of slices of cake. It’s like a grab-and-go dessert table.

I have to say this bouquet-inspired cupcake is almost too pretty to eat. Almost.

The cupcake would be ideal at a smaller wedding reception, or even as an accompaniment to your full-size wedding cake. It would be a great wedding favor for your guests to take home too – packaged in “take home” containers. So cute.

The vanilla cupcake is decorated with an edible bouquet of meringue roses that are on top of a layer of buttercream icing.

Or if you’re not feeling that ambitious, you could always ask your baker to create the cupcakes and personalize them by using your wedding colors for the flower colors.

But if you’re looking for something that goes beyond “just cupcakes” why not consider serving a wedding cake and cupcakes! That’s right – it’s the best of both worlds.

I saw this whimsical idea here and just had to share it with you because it’s really brilliant.

You can still have a somewhat traditional wedding cake, complete with several tiers of your favorite cupcake flavors.

But instead of embellishing the cake with flowers or candy or fondant creations you decorate each tier with cupcakes.

A really fun idea might be to give the groom the choice of flavor for the cupcakes and then the cupcakes could stand in for his groom’s cake. You could do something as simple as chocolate and vanilla or something more exotic.

And the mini flags featuring the newlyweds’ initials are a nice touch.

This is such a fun idea – I’d love to see more cake and cupcake duos at wedding receptions this year!

And these golden cupcakes would have been at the top of my list of favorites!

The cupcakes are carrot cake – which isn't everyone's cup of tea, I know – but I'm sure you could adjust the cake flavor to something you liked if you aren't a fan of cakes made from carrots.

Personally, I think these would be perfect at a fall wedding because for some strange reason carrot cake makes me think of fall. The cupcakes are topped with a delicious looking cream cheese frosting (natch!).

But the best part has to be that each cupcake is topped with edible gold dust and a leaf. Let me say that again. Edible. Gold. Dust. If the wedding and reception weren't enough to wow your guests, feeding them edible gold dust will certainly raise the buzz-o-meter.

I've never been lucky enough to eat anything topped with edible gold dust, but I'd certainly give these glittering beauties a try!
