Recipe and DIY: Southern Living 2012 White Christmas Cake
It will come as no surprise to regular readers of A Wedding Cake Blog that I am an avid Southern Living magazine fan.
The world stops once a month when an issue comes. I peruse every feature, and file away recipes for that week’s menu or upcoming party, and I dream — and sometimes use — the travel advice on the pages.
So I look forward every year to the December issue, and what has come to be known as “the big white cake” on the cover.
This year’s big white cake is beautiful in its simplicity, and I applaud the powers that be who chose it, because it’s the perfect all purpose white cake. Perfect for birthdays, perfect for weddings.
We’ve gotten so fancy, haven’t we? And there’s nothing wrong with fancy. But every good cook should have a very basic, completely perfect cake in their repertoire, and this is a good candidate for that job.
The cake — Mrs. Billett’s White Cake — is done up in lovely, minimalist fashion with white buttercream and fondant snowflakes. I was excited to share this with you because it would make a sensational winter wedding cake, and the fondant snowflakes are easy AND spectacular (which just happens to be the perfect combo IMO.)
Find the recipe here. Find the fondant snowflake DIY here (this one’s a video.)
Ah, Southern Living. I love how fabulous you continue to be.

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round-Up for December 9, 2012
Hi Guys!
Aren’t the holidays the best? I mean, I know it can be hectic, trying to get everything done, all while being intentional and meaningful about every little detail. But still, it’s such a great time to gather in and just love on people.

Deep Brown Winter Wedding Cake
I thought I’d feature something a little different today.
You should know that I love the idea of a winter wedding. Actually, I think that for me, I prefer fall and winter over spring and summer anyday for a wedding. I think I love the minimalistic design elements of these seasons, and the rich, warm colors. And there’s something about finding the beauty in a sparse landscape that really appeals to me.
This cake is like Read More

And So It Begins: Winter Holiday Wedding Cakes
I figure if the big box stores are already advertising, and I’m already shopping, then it’s okay for me to start the winter holiday/Christmas-inspired cake posting…yes? I thought you’d agree.
This one had me at Red Ribbon. Is this not completely, totally, utterly fabulous? What appears to be a pile of presents is, in fact, a cake. Or a pile of cakes. I’m not sure.
At any rate, I totally Read More

Crystal and Pink White Snowflake Cake
I know that my friends and family in other parts of the country are rrrreeeealllyy super hoping that winter spread its last hurrah recently, when the Facebook posts about falling snow were coming thick and furious. So to bid adieu (hopefully) to the white stuff, here’s a reminder of all that is enchanting and sparkly about it.
There’s just something about a snowflake cake!
When I saw this gorgeousness from Rachael Teufel and Company at Intricate Icings, I knew I had to feature it. The cake was the perfect centerpiece for a breathtaking New Year’s Eve wedding in Colorado. And those aren’t Read More

Happy New Year, Everyone!
Yes, I know that technically, I’m a full week behind. And I know that technically, today is the Epiphany, and the end of Christmas, and not the New Year. But is anyone else having a hard time cranking up the old machine again, getting on the horse? I blame Read More

We loves us some Kara Buntin of A Cake to Remember around here. Yes. We do. So, is it any surprise that I choose to wave goodbye to 2011 with one of her cakes? Probably not.
I am a firm believer in the Twelve Days of Christmas, y’all. In our home, Christmas isn’t over until the Wise Men have come and gone on January 6 (that’s the Epiphany, by the way, in case you are wondering what in the world I’m talking about.) Only then does the tree come down, and all the pretty decorations are tucked lovingly away til next December.
But, even I realize Read More

Silver Pinecone Wedding Cake
I’m not going to lie. The day I figured out that spray paint + pine cones = amazing winter accessories for my house I kind of went nuts. When I figured out that I already owned silver and gold spray paint AND my backyard was littered with pine cones so in essence this DIY decoration was free…I kind of flipped out.
I’m sure these pine cones aren’t exactly spray painted (something about that seems incredibly unsafe to be near your edibles) but they are a gorgeous silver on top of an ice Read More

Did you gasp when you saw this cake? I did! If you didn’t go ahead and take a minute and look at it again. Okay, now you’re gasping.
Simply gorgeous. This cake was made by Brooklyn Cake in..well..Brooklyn of course! The website says this as well and I totally agree but you don’t have to just do red and green or silver and white to have a cake full of holiday cheer! We are moving beyond Santa and Snowflakes this year people. Of course if you’ve Read More
