Unconventional Wedding Cakes
In today’s wedding world, it seems that most wedding cakes are unconventional. It’s almost unconventional to have a white on white wedding cake! But in an unconventional wedding cake might refer to the design, the topper, or the flavors featured. Regarding design, one popular unconventional style today is the topsy turvy, asymmetrical design. Stacked cake layers give the illusion that the cake could spill over any minute, when in fact, the cake is balanced and level. Unconventional toppers are another way that a couple may make their cake unique. The couple who loves Angry Birds, for instance, can feature the adorable characters perched atop their cake. Can’t last a minute without your cell phone? There’s a wedding topper for that, too. Prefer Goth to Victorian? No problem. A talented baker can help you realize your dream cake. But you might opt for traditional design and toppers, and still find ways to be unconventional with flavors – even savory alternatives to wedding cakes, like “cakes” made of wheels of cheese, or layers of savory meet pies, might stand in for a conventional cake. So, express yourselves! In cake! And send us pictures.
Whimsical Wedding Cake
I’m always on the lookout for totally unique and somewhat out-of-this-world wedding cakes.
Why? Because sometimes that “traditional” wedding cake just won’t do it.
Which is why I’m head over heels for today’s cake. I present to you the “West End” cake from our friends at Hockleys Cakes over in the United Kingdom.
This stunning creation has so much going on, but it’s not overwhelming in any way. In fact, it all just works. Read More

Cereal Wedding Cake
While we have featured unique and non-traditional wedding cakes here before, I don’t think we’ve ever featured a wedding cake made out of cereal!
But when I saw this cake on Pinterest I knew it would eventually make its way to the blog. So today is your lucky day. Read More
Geometric Wedding Cake
I never was very good with geometry and all those weird shapes that went with it.
But I can tell you this – I’m a big fan of wedding cakes that aren’t the “traditional” round or square shapes. In fact, my own wedding cake was heart-shaped (which was trendy more than a dozen years ago, trust me!)
And that brings us to today’s cake – the geometric wedding cake. Read More
Chocolate Wedding Cake with Sugar Flowers
Until recently I never would have considered chocolate frosting on a wedding cake.
Don’t get me wrong – I love chocolate – but I always thought wedding cakes “had to” be frosted with white icing of some kind whether it’s fondant or buttercream.
Well, I’m happy to report that I’ve changed my mind and if I had to do my wedding cake over, it would be all chocolate.
As today’s cake proves, a wedding cake with chocolate icing can be beautiful and elegant and downright stunning. Read More
Jelly Bean Wedding Cake
It’s that time of year again – the store aisles are full of so many kinds of jelly beans, it’s hard to choose a favorite!
Personally I’m a fan of the “traditional” jelly beans (minus the licorice flavored beans). But I never thought about embellishing a wedding cake with jelly beans. Until now.
How fun is this “jelly bean wedding cake”? I don’t know about you, but I smiled as soon as I saw this cake.
It’s just so cute and fun and whimsical – three things that mean you can’t pass up this cake. Read More
Woodland Wedding Cake
I am going to go out on a limb here and say that spring really is here to stay as we inch closer to April.
With that in mind, I wanted to find a wedding cake that was all about nature and spring-like things. I think this “woodland” wedding cake is that cake.
Our friends at Hockleys Cakes created this one-of-a-kind wedding cake for a bride and groom who “love everything woodland.” I am in awe just looking at this cake and taking in all the incredible details.
The cake itself features three tiers – each a different flavor. I love wedding cakes that have a different flavor in each tier, so in my book this cake is already awesome. Read More
Wedding Cake with Sugar Bubbles
Bubbles are one of my favorite things.
They’re fun and whimsical and oh so bubbly! And you can’t help but smile when you think of bubbles. Even the word itself is funny. Say it with me – bubbles!
Which bring us to today’s wedding cake that is surrounded by bubbles.
The wedding cake itself is simple enough – iced with a lovely buttercream icing. But what makes it really incredible is the sea of bubbles that surround the bottom of the cake. It’s almost as though the cake is floating on the bubbles. Read More
