Ombre Pink Roses Cake

Pink ombre roses cake

I am a sucker for the ombre technique of gently moving from lighter to darker shades of a color.  Whether it’s a dress, a wall, a piece of stationary, or a cake – if it’s a color that I love, and the artist has used ombre, I’m in.

This cake super had me at hello.  Isn’t it just perfection?  Gradually moving from the palest pink to Valentine red, it’s just breathtaking.  In fact, I think it’s the perfect cake to feature as we head toward the month o’ love.

This lovely cake is the work of Janet Mohapi-Banks, a wonderfully talented baker and cake artist located just outside Read More

Indian-Inspired Red and Gold Wedding Cake

Indian Inspired Wedding Cake

We love a little pop of color in a wedding, and this one was just incredible.

Jenny and Aashish sought to bring together her Midwestern background with his Indian heritage, and the result was one of the most stunning weddings I’ve ever seen.  Of course, I’m a sucker for cranberry red, so that might be part of it…I would TOTALLY wear that bridesmaid,s dress again.

But of course, the cake is the star of OUR show.  And the cranberry red shows up here, too.  Three simple layers, decorated with a mehndi-inspired paisley motif in gold, trimmed with cranberry red ribbon, and topped with a few Read More

Grand Red and Black Wedding Cake

Black, red and white wedding cake

The cake I’m featuring today demands your attention.

This is no shy, shrinking violet of a wedding cake.  No demure, “Oh, look how sweet and innocent I am.  Really, just a place in the corner for me.”  No sirree bobby.  This cake declares itself the grande dame of wedding cakes, and expects you to perk up and notice – and use your best posture – when you walk into the reception.

Or is it just me?  You know, attributing personalities to cakes?

At any rate, this cake by Shawna of Flourish Cakes  (follow her on Twitter here) in Courtice, Ontario, is the kind of cake that is truly a centerpiece Read More

Scrabble Cake Redux

scrabble2

We’ve featured a Scrabble themed cake here before.  However, that cake was a literal representation of the game…representing the board and all.  This one is a little more subjective.  If you’ve been pinning away on Pinterest you have probably seen a high variety of Scrabble-themed stuff.  And stuff was literally the only word that could encompass the Scrabble-mania that has rocked the pinning world.  Scrabble art, Scrabble cookies, Scrabble blankets…it’s amazing what you can do with those tiny letters.  I mean honestly…someone HAS to do something Read More

Patriotic Wedding Cake

july4th

Happy July 4th to my fellow Americans! If you are not American..well..then Happy Monday!

Let’s start this 4th of July off right with a little bit of patriotism..in the form of edible baked goods.

It may surprise you to know that I did not go digging for this cake. I was looking for something theme-y but did not think that I would be able to find a wedding cake that was classy and patriotic. My friends it can be done..as seen here. This couple took a traditional round cake and gave it a little American flare by draping a fondant American flag around the cake. What is that to the left you ask? Well I do believe it is some sort of Read More

Philadelphia Wedding Cake

Philadelphis Cake

I’ll admit I don’t know much about Philadelphia. Rocky, cheese steak sandwiches, and that it’s where the Fresh Prince was born and raised. (And spent most of his days on the playground from what I hear).

Another thing I know about Philadelphia is that is home to the LOVE statue. You know the one.I learned something new about Philadelphia today. Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture and the city of Philadelphia inspired this gorgeous wedding cake. This three tiered Read More

Red Poppy Cake

Poppy Cake

Poppies make me happy…real or fake. So this cake, made by the talented Anne Heap at Pink Cake Box, undoubtedly makes me happy. (Side note, I also have a friend who recently named her daughter Poppy…which has thus inspired this Poppy-themed post).

Sweet and simple, this two-tiered round cake keeps it minimalistic with a smooth, white buttercream frosting and dark chocolate piping at the base. The red poppies give this cake a little pinch of modern. It’s a nice alternative to fondant Read More

Mini Cakes

Mini Cakes

Last week I was at a wedding shower for an awesome co-worker of mine. I am on the party planning committee and it was a gorgeous party if I do say so myself. While we were chowing down on some delicious Publix cake the bride-to-be was telling us all about her wedding cake to-be. After a long deliberation between cupcakes or fancy cake she decided Read More
