Candy Cane Cake

candy cane

Let’s talk about my favorite Christmas Treat. The Candy flippin’ Cane.

I know that probably seems like a real head scratcher. Most people would say fudge, shortbread cookies, or gingerbread. My husband would say Sausage Cheese Balls. For me…it’s the candy cane. In fact…as I tap out these letters I am enjoying one right now. I guess I should add that I swirled it around and let it dissolve in my hot chocolate first–but oh well. It’s that pepperminty taste I crave.

So in honor of my beloved peppermint I decided to feature this Candy Cane Cake made by Annie from Annie’s Eats. While this cake is beautiful Read More

Holly Themed Wedding Cake

holly

This is going to be the first of a few cakes that we feature from our friends at Pink Cake Box. Let’s face it…these girls know cake and they know how to embrace a good theme with class and style.

This holiday wedding cake is a typical square wedding cake with the three tiers covered in ivory fondant. The base of each tier is trimmed off with a crisp layer of ivory fondant ribbon. The exceptional part of this cake is the hand painted holly leaves and berries on this cake. Truth be told I think the “commercialism” of Read More

Reindeer Wedding Cake

reindeer cake

Somehow Christmas Week is upon us. I seriously am not sure how though. It seems like I was just sweating my baguettes off every time I walked outside…but apparently six months have passed since then. Although, it was 79 degrees on Friday. What’s up with that, weather gods?
Anyway. It’s Christmas Week and I am off for the next two weeks and since Christmas has come out of nowhere I have to cram all my Christmas spirit into the next six days. So I officially title this week Christmas Cake Week 2011! And because Read More

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round-Up for December 18, 2011

Minimalist Un-iced cake

The week before Christmas.  Is your hair on fire, like mine?

What a beautiful time of the year, when we remember hope and excitement and a thousand other things that make life sparkly and fun…that is, if we don’t wear ourselves out in the process.  So my hope for you this week is that, at some point, you can grab a cup of cocoa, filled to the brim with marshmallows, sit in front of your Christmas tree, or by candlelight or glow of a fire, and just be.

It’s a crazy week for me too, so let’s do this.  And we’ll start with Read More

I’m in a contrary state of mind.

We are about to launch into the week before Christmas, and so, of course, Christen and I both have some delighful, sugar-plummy cakes planned for you.  So what better way to cleanse your brain palate than to offer you something completely off the wall today?

Yes.  It’s July in December.

I mean, we do the opposite all the time, right?  Christmas in July and all that?  Well, here’s a look at the summeriest thing I could find:  basketweave and strawberries, trimmed with ivy, with Read More

Cake Topper Friday: Vintage-Style Christmas Cutouts

christmas

Next week I have a big fat week of Christmas-themed cakes planned for you. I mean I could just post regular old wedding cakes–but then I wouldn’t really be in the spirit would I?

In order to gear up for Christen’s Christmas-avaganza 2011 I thought we’d start here with this cute cake topper. This is a Scandanavian-style wood cake topper, featuring a beautiful Christmas tree, complete with presents and robins. Love. It. Especially the robins. It’s vintage and Read More

Sweet and Simple White Buttercream Cake

buttercream1

Perhaps I can be a bit predictable, but a simple round white cake really gets me excited. Especially when the baker chooses to do just a little tiny something to send the cake over the edge. Just like this one. Sure it looks like a simple white cake with a light cream ribbon around each tier. My favorite part is the textured buttercream frosting. First Read More

Alice in Wonderland Cake

alice

It’s no secret that I am a fan of Alice in Wonderland. I am also a fan of Alice in Wonderland weddings. I mean have you ever seen some of these magical Alice-themed weddings that Disney has put on? Ah-mazing.  We’ve featured a couple of Alice in Wonderland-themed treats here and here on A Wedding Cake Blog in fact. I’ve even seen some non-Disney weddings that have been breathtaking. There is just something about the story that is just so whimsical that allows for a gorgeous backdrop.

Enter this amazing cake made by Karen Portaleo the Sugar Artist (what a cool title, yes?) from Highland Bakery in Atlanta, Georgia. I mean seriously–let’s get Read More

Combination Wedding and Groom’s Cake

halfhalf

This cake caught my interest on Pinterest. Why? Because I feel like it summarizes my life. I am a teacher so I spend most of my days sticky sweet and annoyingly traditional. However, every once and awhile I can easily flip to the dark side and my kids think “Hey, she’s a little nutty”.

So. That’s me. Half a traditional beautiful white cake and the other half a gorgeous chocolate groom’s cake. I have never seen a cake like this and to tell you the truth, I love it. The couple decided Read More
