Sweet and Simple White Buttercream Cake

buttercream1

Perhaps I can be a bit predictable, but a simple round white cake really gets me excited. Especially when the baker chooses to do just a little tiny something to send the cake over the edge. Just like this one. Sure it looks like a simple white cake with a light cream ribbon around each tier. My favorite part is the textured buttercream frosting. First Read More

Combination Wedding and Groom’s Cake

halfhalf

This cake caught my interest on Pinterest. Why? Because I feel like it summarizes my life. I am a teacher so I spend most of my days sticky sweet and annoyingly traditional. However, every once and awhile I can easily flip to the dark side and my kids think “Hey, she’s a little nutty”.

So. That’s me. Half a traditional beautiful white cake and the other half a gorgeous chocolate groom’s cake. I have never seen a cake like this and to tell you the truth, I love it. The couple decided Read More

Bare Branch Wedding Cake

Bare Branches Wedding Cake

We’re gearing up – or maybe you’re already in full throttle – for the spectacularity that is the Winter Holiday Season – Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to YOU!  But do you remember the old days?  The days when Christmas didn’t start five minutes after you pushed back from your Thanksgiving seconds?  Or – shudder – right after the Labor Day picnic?

Am I showing my age?  Sigh.

Well…all of that to say that I do remember such a time…a time when you thought…hmm…it’s not fall, it’s not Christmas…it…just…is.  No pretty leaves, no super crazy snow.  Just beautiful bare Read More

Black and White Scroll Work Wedding Cake

blackandwhitescroll

Black and white is classic a la Coco Chanel…so obviously a black and white wedding cake is oozing with class and sophistication. This is a three-tiered round cake covered in white buttercream. The buttercream is covered in a gorgeous black scroll work pattern. My favorite part of this cake is the incredible black fondant bow that starts at the top of the cake, and flutters all the way down to the bottom tier. I love how it’s wrapped up like a perfect present..and I love presents!

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round-Up for December 3, 2011

Twilight Wedding Cake

HOW is it already December?

I ask that for a couple of reasons.  First off, HOLY COW, I HAVE A LOT OF PLANNING TO DO!  Shopping, baking, wrapping, mailing!  I’m not sure why I’m accusing Christmas of sneaking up on me.  Clearly, the fault lies in my lap, not the calendar’s.

But I’m also just completely amazed that we’ve been at this for a year!  Well, a little over a year, but I didn’t come on board until January, so it’s feeling like my anniversary is coming up.

Wow – can I just stop and gush for a minute, and Read More

White Ruffle Cake

White Ruffle Cake

We’re apparently in good company when it comes to ruffle love!

You saw our terrific Ruffle Week 2011 last month, yes?  With cascading ruffles, ombre ruffles, and even white chocolate ruffles.  Sigh. We’re still kind of pretty-drunk from it all.

But lo and behold, MORE ruffles poured in!  Tasha Nagy from Kick Ass Cakes in Fraser Valley, British Columbia sent me this sweet and pretty cake because she knows we are OBSESSED!  Seriously!  Ruffles!  Pearls! Flowers!  All White!  It’s like Tasha made Read More

Hand-Piped Poem Cake

ee

Even though I am a teacher, my undergraduate major was Theatre. I never actually wanted to be an actress or anything. My initial plan was to teach Drama…which I eventually did…but then many years later have ended up teaching 2nd & 3rd grade…where, coincidentally, we have plenty of drama.

Anyway, my point is that for part of my graduating performance, I had to present a poem as a monologue. I chose i carry your heart by e.e. cummings. It seemed appropriate. I had just started dating my future husband a few months before and I was about to graduate (he was not) and move to Read More

Dark Red Roses Cake

Dark Roses Cake

Well, by now you know that we are all about the seasons around here.  But sometimes it’s nice to see an expression of seasons in a way that isn’t so typical.  Take autumn, for instance.  You think autumn wedding cake, your mind automatically goes to colored leaves.  But here’s another take on the colors of fall:  rich red roses.

It was love at first sight when I saw this cake.  The simple buttercream finish is trimmed with a wide, black ribbon, elegant scrollwork, and the most beautiful deep red roses.  For an interesting contrast, the roses are paired with orchids.  You would never think, “I know, I’ll put orchids and roses Read More

White Chocolate Ruffle Cake

Ruffle White chocolate Cake

Today, we wrap up Ruffle Week 2011 here on A Wedding Cake Blog with a cake that has a little different take on the frilly furbelows of ruffles.

Ruffles. Meet Chocolate. Helloooo, perfection.

Don’t you simply LOVE this cake? Two tiers of cake, enrobed in real chocolate, People. This isn’t candy coating, or modeling chocolate. This chocolate has been tempered and made to resemble rustic ruffles, so that each slice of the cake yields a lovely snap. And check out the gorgeous flower pinned to the side, and the topping of – what else? – more Read More

Cascading Ruffle Cake

190x190_pink-ruffle-cake

True fact.  Ruffles do not have to take over your cake.  They can cascade down it like some gorgeous waterfall.  Just like this one.

This cake is a three tiered cake covered in flawless white fondant.  I love how the ruffles just sort of fall down the side of the cake in various shades of pink.  I am not sure how but I almost want to wear this cake.  You know, like a shirt.  In fact I think I may own a Read More
