Cupcake Dress

cupcake dress

So don’t you remember that time that you got all gussied up and went out and wore a 600 pound dress made of cake?  Oh you don’t.

Me either.  But Melissa of Cupcakes OMG! does..in fact she did it not too long ago.

The cake was made by Katelyn Selin, Kait Ingram and Sandrea Park Welch at the Taste of Charleston’s Iron Chef’s Competition.  They used forty vanilla and red-velvet sheet cakes and 190 pounds of buttercream.  Oh my.  Who got to lick that bowl?

The fact that this was in Charleston, which is about an hour and a half from my house, makes me sad I missed this.  How often to do get to see a life size cupcake with a human in it?  Never.  That’s how often.  If you have..well then I think I need to hang out with you more often.  Send me an e-mail.  I’ll send you my phone number and we’ll text and become BFF’s.

You can check out Melissa’s entire blog post with tons and tons of pictures here.  And yup, she got to eat her dress.  Boom.

Pink Bow Tie

pink bow toe

Cupcakes are probably the Lord’s perfect food.  I’ve accepted that fact.  For weddings, most cupcakes are dolled up with mile high buttercream frosting and look adorable to boot.  Sometimes though…you just need a pretty cupcake layered in chocolate ganache.

Yum.

These adorable cupcakes are frosted with a thin layer of ganache and topped with a gorgeous light pink bow. I also think the random pink cupcake with the chocolate bow tie on the bottom tier is adorable Read More

Wedding Cake Trends for 2011

Buttoned Cake

So seven months into 2011 I think it’s time we talk trends baby. Cake trends that is. Because let’s face it..I am always behind on clothing trends. I try so hard but oh my goodness how do I love a pony-tail and cardigans..I am so boring that way.  However, cake trends?  I think I got it.

Since I’ve been blogging about wedding cakes five days a week for the last seven months I have begun to take notice of the good, the awesome, and the coveted of wedding cake designs. There are lots of fun options that you can do with your wedding cake. 2011 has definitely been a wedding season of sweet, pretty, and creative. Here are just a few things that I am digging as we make our way into the last five months of 2011.

Double It Up

The Double Height Tier is probably my favorite trend this year.  It’s a pretty simple concept: take a simple three-tier round cake and add height to one of the tiers.  It gives the cake height and an asymmetrical quality that takes it from a normal cake to a spectacular one.   Traditionally a cake tier is anywhere from 3-4 inches tall.  To achieve the double height the baker simply adds Read More

Bride and Groom Wedding Cupcakes

fondant cupcakes

There is something about fondant that just makes everything so beautiful. Don’t you agree? For years bakers have been turning out gorgeous wedding cake after wedding cake. They have been able to do such a thing because of one concrete-like material: fondant. It might not be the tastiest thing in the world…but it sure is pretty.
Now bakers are starting to take it to the next level and produce fondant covered cupcakes. Like these red velvet ones that the Read More

Cake versus Cupcake: The Smackdown

In this corner we have the traditional wedding cake.  The modern wedding cake was introduced in the 20th century and the tiered wedding cake became popular in 1902.

In the other corner we have the cupcake.  The cupcake can actually be traced back to 1796…over one hundred years before the first modern wedding cake.  Their popularity at weddings only happened in the 2000’s as cupcakes became trendy.  According to Wikipedia, the cupcakes first gained publicity in 2001 after Magnolia Bakery in New York City was featured on an episode of Sex and the City.  Thank YOU Carrie Bradshaw.

A dilemma many modern brides are having is the great debate between cupcake versus cake.  Which one do you choose?

Well, let me break it down for you:

Pink Cupcakes

dual frosting

I often ask myself…”Why do cupcakes only come with one color frosting?”

Okay, I don’t really ask myself that. However, I will from this day forward, after seeing these chocolate cupcakes with multi-colored frosting little beauties. It’s subtle enough that you have to look closely… Read More

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round-Up for May 29, 2011

Purple Wedding Cake

Oh, but what a week it has been!  Graduations and teacher’s gifts and vacation planning oh my!  I don’t know if your spring has been break neck speed like ours has been, but I am certainly glad for a long holiday weekend to slow the heck down and take in some family time.  Out to dinner, playing by the pool, and off to the beach – good times Read More

Chocolate Zucchini & Raspberry Cupcakes

raspberry cupcakes

So..not exactly a wedding cake..but I saw this picture and I couldn’t handle the loveliness of it all.  These cupcakes are zucchini and chocolate flavored (oh yes..who knew that something that sounds so wrong could be SO right?)  I would not mind eating my vegetables if they could always be ingested with chocolate.  The tiny cakes are topped with cream cheese icing Read More

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round-Up for April 3, 2011

Marie Antoinette Cake

Zip, zoom, bang!  I don’t know about y’all, but my early spring is off to a roaring start.  So many exciting things going on that it’s hard to keep up.  A wedding here, a birthday party there, visits from friends to plan, a trip to a wonderful, well-known shelling beach to ponder – and a girls-only cruise that I can hardly wait to savor!

Wait?  Where was I?  Oh yes.

And if that weren’t enough, there’s a royal couple planning a royal wedding, and we are royally interested!  Too much?  Well, you’ll forgive me, since we are within a month of Kate and Will’s Big Day.  Perhaps we will return to non-Kate-and-Will posts following April 29.  But for now we Read More
