Floral Wedding Cakes

What’s not to love about a floral wedding cake? The trend to decorate cakes with flowers, whether real or gum paste, really became all the rage during the 1980s, when Martha Stewart showed us all how wrong we’d been doing weddings up to that point. Gone suddenly were the little bride and groom figurines made of porcelain or plastic that stood proudly atop cakes. Replacing them were mounds and cascades and accents of flowers of all shapes, sizes, and hues. The trend may have died down to some extent; today, we’re as apt to see a bride and groom cake topper – or a pair of birds or bicycles, or anything else the couple might fancy – as flowers. But flowers have not lost favor completely. In fact, florists are still busy preparing floral toppers for cakes that match the bride’s color palette and bouquet. Likewise, bakers are kept busy crafting handmade, sugar or gum paste flowers, or at the very least, custom coloring store bought gum paste creations to offset their beautiful cakes. There are a couple of points to remember when choosing to trim your cake with fresh flowers. First, make sure that the bloom you’d like to use is NOT poisonous. Wouldn’t you hate to send people to the hospital because they ingested a piece of your cake that had ivy on it? And secondly, if at all possible, ask your florist for pesticide-free blooms. Bug killing chemicals = not tasty. And finally, if it’s gum or sugar paste flowers that you’re after, remind guests that, although they are technically edible, it’s probably not very tasty or a good idea. If you want edible decorations, you should probably stick with real or marzipan fruit.

Lilac, Gray and Plum Desserts

Lilac

Purple, purple, purple!

So here is a fact.  Devoting an entire table to lollipops, cookies, cupcakes, macaroons, and cake at your wedding may in fact send one into a sugar shock.  Luckily, this particular photo is just a table set up by the talented Shauna Young for the Minneapolis/St. Paul Weddings Magazine Bridal Party.  The cake in the center is gorgeous with fun fondant flowers decorating the tiers.  I’m not even sure Read More

Black and Green Damask Cake

Black and Green Damask

Hello..my name is Christen and I would like to introduce you to my new boyfriend.  Or girlfriend..it seems like this cake has a little too much class to be a boy.  Either way I’m sure it’s delicious.  At least it looks delicious, that is.

Black and green usually isn’t a color combination that jumps out at me.  It actually sort of reminds me of bruising…but I digress, because in this instance it makes perfect sense.  The four-tiered cake has alternate Read More

Lemon Wedding Cake

We’re getting word from all over the country of April Showers…and a few April Flowers.  Friends in the Southeast are telling us of cold and rainy weather, while pals in the Midwest are crowing about the first irises of the season.  Here in the South, we continue to enjoy lots of sunshine and an early summer as usual.

As our thoughts turn to family traditions and springtime rituals of Easter egg hunts and beautiful bunnies, we are dreaming of Read More

Grandview Peony Cake

Grandview Peony Cake

Well, Honey, Bless Your Heart.

I have mentioned my deep and abiding love for buttercream – I’m almost certain of it.  Way back in the days when I was less a spectator and much more a baker myself, I loved the perfection of a perfectly smooth buttercream cake.  And if it tasted good on top of all that beauty?  Well, so much the better.

Jenniffer White of Cup a Dee Cakes in Tunnel Hill, Georgia, is a master Read More

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round-Up for April 10, 2011

Multi color wedding cake and sweets

We will confess right here and now: it is terribly difficult to keep your figure when you spend hours a day reading – and occasionally sampling – the MOST luscious cake confections available on Planet Earth. Thank goodness for a gym and a handy walking path (oh, and a hubby who cooks delicious, healthy food), or I may balloon to the size of a small dirigible.

But we’re happy for Spring and lots of Spring-y things! Here in the southeast, we’re getting the first strawberries, and they’re inspiring us to make all kinds of yummy treats.

But you didn’t come here to hear me wax poetic about gaining weight and Read More

A Royal Wedding Cake Profile: A look at Fiona Cairns

Fiona Cairns

It was announced earlier this week that Fiona Cairns has been chosen by Prince William and Kate Middleton to bake their wedding cake. I’ve been eagerly counting down the days until my all night Royal Wedding Slumber Party (there will be one guest in attendance…that would be yours truly.) Since I am obsessed totally pumped about this wedding, I had to do a little digging on one Fiona Cairns.

I hit up the Fiona Cairns website and found Read More

Marie Antoinette Cake

Zip, zoom, bang!  I don’t know about y’all, but my early spring is off to a roaring start.  So many exciting things going on that it’s hard to keep up.  A wedding here, a birthday party there, visits from friends to plan, a trip to a wonderful, well-known shelling beach to ponder – and a girls-only cruise that I can hardly wait to savor!

Wait?  Where was I?  Oh yes.

And if that weren’t enough, there’s a royal couple planning a royal wedding, and we are royally interested!  Too much?  Well, you’ll forgive me, since we are within a month of Kate and Will’s Big Day.  Perhaps we will return to non-Kate-and-Will posts following April 29.  But for now we Read More
