Simple Wedding Cakes

Sometimes simple says it best. You might choose a simple wedding cake because you prefer a minimalist approach, or because you like you like to stick with the basics when it comes to cake, or even because you are interested in showcasing a particularly fancy flower or cake topper, simple wedding cakes never go out of style. The basic, stacked, white wedding cake, frosted in a smooth coating of buttercream or covered in a snowy blanket of fondant, may hide beautiful flavors and colors beneath its exterior – the best of both worlds. Or maybe you and your groom prefer the traditional “white cake, white frosting” approach – or “chocolate cake, chocolate frosting” – after all, simple doesn’t necessarily mean traditional. On the other hand, a simple cake may be the perfect way to showcase a special caketopper or flower that has personal meaning for you. A topper that shows your style or a hobby that you and future hubby share becomes all the more visible when it doesn’t need to compete with a fancy cake. Maybe you have a family heirloom that can nestle atop your cake. Alternatively, some dazzling orchids or floppy peonies may be all the statement that you need to make. A simple cake need not be boring, after all.

‘Something Blue’ Wedding Cake

Something Blue Cake

This is the cake for the bride who just can’t figure out where to add her something blue.

This stunning cake is finished in fondant, with different treatment for each of its three layers:  the bottom layer features a quilted pattern; the middle layer has buttercream piped in an intricate-yet-uniform swirl, with an accent of random, baby blue dots; and the top layer is peppered with dots in a triplicate pattern.  And, in a move that we haven’t seen Read More

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round-Up for April 17, 2011

Lemon Wedding Cake

We’re getting word from all over the country of April Showers…and a few April Flowers.  Friends in the Southeast are telling us of cold and rainy weather, while pals in the Midwest are crowing about the first irises of the season.  Here in the South, we continue to enjoy lots of sunshine and an early summer as usual.

As our thoughts turn to family traditions and springtime rituals of Easter egg hunts and beautiful bunnies, we are dreaming of Read More

Grandview Peony Cake

Grandview Peony Cake

Well, Honey, Bless Your Heart.

I have mentioned my deep and abiding love for buttercream – I’m almost certain of it.  Way back in the days when I was less a spectator and much more a baker myself, I loved the perfection of a perfectly smooth buttercream cake.  And if it tasted good on top of all that beauty?  Well, so much the better.

Jenniffer White of Cup a Dee Cakes in Tunnel Hill, Georgia, is a master Read More

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round-Up for April 10, 2011

Multi color wedding cake and sweets

We will confess right here and now: it is terribly difficult to keep your figure when you spend hours a day reading – and occasionally sampling – the MOST luscious cake confections available on Planet Earth. Thank goodness for a gym and a handy walking path (oh, and a hubby who cooks delicious, healthy food), or I may balloon to the size of a small dirigible.

But we’re happy for Spring and lots of Spring-y things! Here in the southeast, we’re getting the first strawberries, and they’re inspiring us to make all kinds of yummy treats.

But you didn’t come here to hear me wax poetic about gaining weight and Read More

Sage, Chocolate Brown, and Cream Color Cupcake Heaven

sage and brown

I think I have expressed once, or twice…or perhaps even three times my love for cupcakes.  Apparently, this cupcake combo comes with a back story.  The cupcake stand was lost en route to the wedding venue so the baker improvised and turned wine glasses upside down and placed a plate on top of them.  To tell you the truth..I kind of think it’s classy.

The best part..please listen to the flavors of these bad boys: Read More
