Unconventional Wedding Cakes

In today’s wedding world, it seems that most wedding cakes are unconventional. It’s almost unconventional to have a white on white wedding cake! But in an unconventional wedding cake might refer to the design, the topper, or the flavors featured. Regarding design, one popular unconventional style today is the topsy turvy, asymmetrical design. Stacked cake layers give the illusion that the cake could spill over any minute, when in fact, the cake is balanced and level. Unconventional toppers are another way that a couple may make their cake unique. The couple who loves Angry Birds, for instance, can feature the adorable characters perched atop their cake. Can’t last a minute without your cell phone? There’s a wedding topper for that, too. Prefer Goth to Victorian? No problem. A talented baker can help you realize your dream cake. But you might opt for traditional design and toppers, and still find ways to be unconventional with flavors – even savory alternatives to wedding cakes, like “cakes” made of wheels of cheese, or layers of savory meet pies, might stand in for a conventional cake. So, express yourselves! In cake! And send us pictures.

Homespun Wedding Cake

Homespun Wedding Cake

Don’t you just want to grab a cup of coffee or a glass of ice cold milk and dig right into this baby?

Lots of cakes that we feature are all about the looks.  And so often, I almost can’t imagine cutting into them because of the hours and hours of work they took to make.  But this cake invites you to get comfortable and cut a big ole’ slab!

If I had to guess (and I do, since I know not who made the cake or what the flavors are) I would say that we have here layers of Read More

Deconstructed Cube Wedding Cake

deconstructed white cube wedding cake

If you’re a foodie, or enjoy watching any of the foodie shows on Bravo or Food Network (etc., etc., etc., infinity), then you’ve heard the term “deconstructed” applied to food.  It’s been around for quite a while now, but you know, I don’t really mind it.  It usually means that the chef is focusing far more on the sum of the parts than he normally would.

This cake caught my eye because it was a “deconstructed” wedding cake.  Now, that’s not really all that new.  There was a mini-trend of separated tier cakes in the 80s, and it seems to continue to this day (you might remember Christen’s Read More

Charlotte Wedding Cake

Charlotte Wedding Cake

Today’s cake is for the lover of rustic or DIY:  the Charlotte Wedding Cake.

Sometimes in the dead of summer (like, you know, now), simpler just seems better, yes?  Sure, ornate cakes with a ton of detail and many man hours will elicit the obiligatory “WOW!” from our guests, and that is all well and good.  But I for one find myself trying to Read More

Summer In Bloom Wedding Cake

Summer Garden Wedding Cake

Today, it was time.

It was time for a vibrant, lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer wedding cake.

Doesn’t this lovely creation just capture the mood of summer perfectly? Whiling away the days, bees buzzing, everything blooming to the hilt, green everywhere. I picture an outdoor ceremony with lots of floppy hats and sundresses. The bride might even have left her shades on.

And isn’t that the neat thing about cakes? Sometimes, you can look at them, and just know the feel of the wedding. I love when Read More

Yellow Submarine Wedding Cake

Yellow Submarine Wedding Cake

And we live
A life of ease.
Everyone of us
Has all we need
.

Sigh.  Love LOVE The Beatles.  Always have, always will.  And what better homage to their idealistic work, than to immortalize their songs in your wedding cake?

So, I adore Yellow Submarine.  You can totally catch me bobbing my head back and forth, driving my Honda, and singing along.  And I think you do, too, and that is why I had to show you this cake.  Originally, it was posted on Read More

Gingham and Flower Wedding Cake

Gingham Wedding Cake

Gingham is darling anyway, but gingham on a cake? Yes, please!

The brainchild of Bijoux Doux in New York City, this cake is whimsical, joie de vivre-y, and makes me want to wear a party dress and drink lemonade.  In other words, it’s summer perfection.

The double-height layers – an effect that we just love around here – are covered with what appear to be made with a silkscreen transfer on sheets of chocolate, but it could be fondant with an amazingly sharp edge.  The muted Read More

Gothic Wedding Cake

Gothic Wedding Cake

I think I spy Victor Van Dort and his Corpse Bride!

Isn’t this fabulous?  This gothic cake by Marianne of Dazzlelicious Cakes in Plymouth, UK, is the talk of the town.  I absolutely LOVE the cool, ghosty blue and black motif. Black and blue roses, y’all!  And swags and swags and stripes and swirls.  This is an amazing cake, and this was a really fun wedding, I just know it.

There is just so much going on here!  Check out the Read More

Snowball Cake pops

Greetings, Cake Lovers and Seekers of Pretty and *sigh* Moments!

What have you been up to this week?  I confess, I’ve had one foot in Fantasyworld (or rather, in the Happiest Place on Earth) and the other in the quagmire that is the last month of the school year.  Will it ever end?  I suppose that’s counter Read More

Confetti Wedding Cake

Confetti Wedding Cake

Shouldn’t a wedding be, first and foremost, a celebration?  And shouldn’t a celebration involve lots and lots of confetti?!

It’s ever so much better than rice, in my opinion.

Does anyone ever throw rice anymore?  Or for that matter, is anyone using birdseed these days?  We used these adorable rice paper hearts confetti, courtesy of Read More
