Circle Wedding Cakes

Think of a traditional wedding cake, and chances are, you will immediately envision a tiered white cake with round layers. Round, or circle, wedding cakes are the standard for tradition. Whether the layers are separated by columns, or rest one upon another, it is safe to say that the majority of tiered cakes favor layers that are round in shape. In recent years, bakers have added interest to the otherwise traditional (and sometimes unexciting) profile of a round cake by stacking layers that are very similar in size, or by varying the height of various layers. But regardless of the size and height, circle wedding cakes are here to stay. And what could be more appropriate to signify and celebrate unending love, than the circle?

Striped Wedding Cake

striped cake

I have to admit. Spending a good chunk of my days looking at wedding cakes I have come to a conclusion. A lot of wedding cakes look the same. Now here is something you don’t see everyday. A striped wedding cake!
I love it..love it, love it!
There are a few things about this cake that make it unique. First, the obvious. The stripes! These stripes could be so hard to pull off. One misplaces stripe on an otherwise gorgeous cake and all we would be talking about is how one stripe is a half a centimeter closer to the other stripe than it should be. I also love the subtle color of the brown stripes. I would love to see this in a light pink..or blue..or oh my gosh turquoise! I die! The second thing is the separated tiers. It’s basically two cakes in one. The pink/peach/brownish roses that separate the tiers give it such great balance. If you hadn’t heard..I love this cake!

Sunflower Cake

Phil and Kristen's Wedding in Waynesville, NC

Here are two words I am loving lately: Sun & flower..combine them together..well that’s even better! It also reminds me of that Liz Claibourne perfume I used to adore in the 7th grade. I used to go to the counter at Belk and spray that bad boy all over. When I finally saved up $35 I went and bought myself a bottle. I saw it on sale at Walgreen’s the other day for $7.99. Oh my.

But I digress. With Spring creeping up I am in the mood for cakes with happy flowers that make me think of sunshine and long nights. Even though the flowers on this cake have more of a fall themed hue I think it could easily be used for spring or summer by throwing in some bright colors. Enough about the flowers..look at the cake! The pipping on this cake is a gorgeous swirl design. I also love the pipping in between the three layers as well. So pretty and so well made by Callie’s Confections in Asheville, NC. (If you’ve never been to Asheville…book your trip now! It is one of my favorite places in the world!)

Strawberry Fields Forever

Luscious Strawberry Cake

Did we mention that we may just live in a state where strawberries are in season while the rest of the country is still shivering?  (Please, don’t hate us.)

But, that would explain to you why I see this cake, and think, “Oh, how perfect for March!” While you see it, and say, “Well, now she’s just torturing us.”

So, let’s call it inspiration for all you brides planning a wedding in the next few months.

This cake makes me think…fresh.  It’s pretty, simple, Read More

Cinderella Cake

Cinderella Cake

It’s not secret. I love all things Disney. Sure this love has grown from countless trips to Disney World but it stems from one place.

Cinderella.

I remember the first time I saw the Disney version of Cinderella. It was the Christmas I was eight years old and it had just come out on VHS. I opened up the package and I was in love with the dark blue packaging and the princess in the sparkly dress on the cover. From that day on no other princess ever did it for me like Cinderella did.
When I went to prom..I wanted to look like Cinderella (only my dress was metallic purple..Oh the 90’s!) and when I got married there was Read More

If I was Kate Middleton..

Kate's Cake

I reserve the right to file this post away under “In Christen’s Wildest Dreams”.

Blog Confession.  Sometimes I pretend I am the Wedding Planner for the Royal Wedding & I think about what I would suggest to Kate and Will.  Because that’s what I call them because we are close and best friends.  We are also going to go skiing in the Alps in the late winter.  You know after all the commotion of the wedding dies down.  The husband and Will get along smashingly and drink pints and talk about futball while Kate and I talk wedding.  I don’t even make them Read More

It’s a nice day for a Black & Pink Wedding..

pinkandblack

My best friend got married exactly 364 days after I did. She caught the bouquet at my wedding so I sort of think I got that ball rolling on that one. You’re welcome.

She spent months sending me links to different J.Crew bridesmaid dresses she wanted me to buy & then calling me ten minutes later and telling me not to order it. After I cancelled one too many orders at JCrew.com she finally called me and said “Christen, I’ve done it. My cake is black. Read More
