Circle Wedding Cakes

Think of a traditional wedding cake, and chances are, you will immediately envision a tiered white cake with round layers. Round, or circle, wedding cakes are the standard for tradition. Whether the layers are separated by columns, or rest one upon another, it is safe to say that the majority of tiered cakes favor layers that are round in shape. In recent years, bakers have added interest to the otherwise traditional (and sometimes unexciting) profile of a round cake by stacking layers that are very similar in size, or by varying the height of various layers. But regardless of the size and height, circle wedding cakes are here to stay. And what could be more appropriate to signify and celebrate unending love, than the circle?

Polka Dots and Roses Cake

Polka Dot and Roses Cake

This cake could be any of a dozen…except for those adorable polka dots.

It caught my eye initially because of its perfection – this cake artist knows his (or her) stuff when it comes to smoothing buttercream and adding swirly cues.  Four stacked layers, decorated simply with buttercream, white on white, and a trim of wide, satin navy ribbon.  To top it, the flower nosegay that crowns the cake is just lovely.  But what really Read More

Pink Vanilla Cotton Candy Cake

Pink Vanilla Cotton Candy Cake

Really…do we ever outgrow our love of pink cotton candy?  I think not.

I have never seen a cake that made me want to trip right out in my mary janes, in my pink gingham dress, and play paper dolls.  This cake is fantastic!  And we have Heather at Sprinkle Bakes to thank for the brilliance of it.

Really…this cake would be absolutely perfect for a small wedding…or a bridesmaids’ luncheon…or a Tuesday afternoon.

I think we need party dresses and Champagne to go with it, yes?

Check out Heather’s Read More

Fuchsia and White Wedding Cake

I love when a plan comes together.  And today’s cake is an example of just that.

This lovely cake is the beautiful work of Kristin from Fat Girl Cakes in Fredericksburg, Virginia.  Kristin tells me that the bride for this wedding wasn’t quite sure what she would like in terms of a cake.  When they met, Kristin flipped through a book of cakes for inspiration, and the bride mentioned that she loved one of the display cakes as well.  She seemed to gravitate toward cakes that featured bright colors…and that’s all Kristin needed to get the creative ball rolling here.

So…where does the “plan come together” Read More

Cake Topper Friday: Sugar Paste Flower Monogram

Sugar Paste Monogram

We’re seeing lots and lots of monograms of late in connection with weddings…and I, for one, am not complaining.  I love, love monograms (which, if you knew me, would not surprise you in the least.)

Lately, though, most of the monograms have been in the form of a placard on the side of the cake – a classic detail that I fall in love with all over again everytime I see it.  Another option – the swooshy rhinestone jobby on the top of the cake.  Sparkles and pretty.  Perfection.

But – ever in search of something new and just a little different Read More

White Wedding Cake with Green Mums

White wedding cake with green mums

Ah, the elusive…green flower.

The what? Yes. The green flower. Rare, and a little strange, but always beautiful.

You can find green-hued flowers in varieties such as geraniums and orchids.  But wait, this isn’t a botany blog, is it?

I love this cake.  My love of white on white cakes was discussed last month here and here.  And today, I find another example of a white on white cake, with just a little punch of unexpected color, via green flowers.  The simple mums encircle the base of the top tier Read More

Yellow Blossom Wedding Cake

Yellow Wedding Cake

So, we’ve seen many cherry blossom wedding cakes of late.  But until now, I hadn’t seen yellow blossoms…and I am in love.

This cake, covered in fondant (ohso appropriate for the casual elegant outdoor reception), is trimmed with a meandering branch that spans all three layers.  Daintily perched on the branch are pale yellow blossoms Read More

Happy Sunday, Everyone!

We’re in sort of a holding pattern here today…anyone else?  We’re talkin’ ’bout that time of year when kiddoes go back to school, but Labor Day hasn’t happened yet…so in your brain, you’re thinking brisk weather, polished and shiny apples for the teacher, and penny loafers…but on the news, you’re seeing summery things like hurricanes and picnic preparations.  It’s all so confusing.

So…if you’re like me, and you’d really like a respite for your tired, overworked brain, check out some of the latest from the World of Wedding.  We’ve gone in search of all the Sweet and Pretty Read More

Rustic Autumn Wedding Cake

Rustic Autumn Wedding Cake

I love me some fall.

Sure, most of the time (read: last week), you’ll find me prattling on about the beach and beachy fun.  But truth be told, autumn is my favorite time of the year.  And you don’t get so much autumn in Florida, until, oh, around January.

So about this time of the year, I start manufacturing autumn in my head.  And I do that by baking with pumpkin and apple, and looking at fall-y things.  This cake is just such Read More

Zombie Wedding Cake

zombie

Yup.  What better way than to celebrate your day that have life-like replicas made of you and your groom armed with chainsaws and warding off zombies who happen to look exactly like your wedding party?

I can’t think of any.  Truthfully when I found this cake on the interwebs I was a little, well, disturbed.  Then, after some research, I found out why exactly this sweet looking bride and groom would have such a cake.  The bride was proposed to while helping friends shoot this short movie for YouTube.  Be warned, it’s not exactly the happiest video I’ve ever seen.  Well, the sweet proposal is happy, but the blood-sucking and tongue-ripping zombies aren’t exactly my cup of tea.  If you do watch it please tell me that you agree that it is just pure luck that there is a guy dressed as a tree and he conveniently Read More
