Circle Wedding Cakes

Think of a traditional wedding cake, and chances are, you will immediately envision a tiered white cake with round layers. Round, or circle, wedding cakes are the standard for tradition. Whether the layers are separated by columns, or rest one upon another, it is safe to say that the majority of tiered cakes favor layers that are round in shape. In recent years, bakers have added interest to the otherwise traditional (and sometimes unexciting) profile of a round cake by stacking layers that are very similar in size, or by varying the height of various layers. But regardless of the size and height, circle wedding cakes are here to stay. And what could be more appropriate to signify and celebrate unending love, than the circle?

Big Huge Harrod’s Cake

harrods

Oh hi, guess what?  It’s our 300th post!  No big deal right?

Big deal to me!  Granted I know I haven’t written all 300 of them myself…we’ve got to give a big shout out to Brooke who takes the weekend shift and creates a great round up…(not to mention fixing all of my grammatical errors)…but to me it’s still a pretty big deal.  Basically because I never got past January 13th in my diaries that I swore I’d write in every day on December 31st.

Much like the fact that this is our 300th post, this cake is a BIG deal.  I mean literally.  Check it out.  It’s HUGE.  It’s a five-tier Read More

Winter Themed Cake

nutcracker

Okay, here are two things that I am painfully aware of.

1. It is not in any way shape or form winter.

2. I know that this cake is not exactly a wedding cake..but a Nutcracker-themed cake made in celebration of a production of The Nutcracker.

Yet, here I sit, ready to get my Nutcracker on in the middle of September.  Oh well.  Because I adore this-six tiered creation that pays homage to all things Snowflake, Gum Drop, Sugar Plum and oh yes, I believe those are little tiny purple mice.  True story, I was in The Nutcracker in the fourth Read More

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round-Up for September 25, 2011

White and Yellow Cake

Fall is finally here!

Oh, sure, it was still 91 degrees today.  But the light is different.  And it actually feels, like, permissible to watch football.

So as the pumpkins and fall colors – and Halloween decorations? – start to make a little more sense, I just wish the mercury would drop.  Just a leeetle.  And incidentally, let me run off on a Christen-like tangent, because something was bothering me today, as I was shopping at the local Fresh Market.  And that would be Peeps, People.  Jack o’ Lantern Peeps.  Is this just wrong to anyone else?  I mean, don’t Peeps lose all their special Peep-i-ness when Read More

Scroll Pattern White Wedding Cake

Scroll pattern white wedding cake

Today, we show another installment in the “all white done right” category.

Jenniffer from Cupadee Cakes consistently turns out beautiful cakes.  This one is no exception.  Four tiers of white buttercream.  Three of the tiers feature a wide piped border, reminiscent in detail of exquisite crown moulding.  Different components make up the border, a combination of fleur-de-lis-like swirls and dots.  On the third layer, Jenniffer fashioned a bow and anchored it with a brooch, both made of gumpaste.  The cake is simple and elegant, Read More

Au Revoir, Summer: Brightly-Colored Floral Cake

Bright floral fondant cake

It’s September 22nd..and guess what? I’m done with you summer. I’m done with the heat, the miserable heat. Although, I must add I will take the vacation back though. Anyway, as my goodbye to summer I thought I’d share this cute little summer cake in order to make room for all the fall I am going to be throwing in your Read More

Black and White Classic Cake

blackwhite

It’s no secret that often times I will post something funky and eclectic over a classic cake. Not because I don’t love the classics–but after awhile they all begin to look alike. However, you can always get me to change my mind when you show me a gorgeous black and white cake. So obviously, I love a tall classic Read More

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round Up for September 18, 2011

Birch Tree Wedding Cake

Pardon me while I turn down the a/c so I can bake some pumpkin muffins.

Anyone else in a rush for fall to feel like, you know, fall?  Here in the extreme Southeast, we’ve learned to take our fall cues from things other than the rustle of leaves and the cooling of temperatures.  How do I know it’s fall?  Well…lovebugs come back for round two. (Or is it round three?)  Pumpkin patches start to pop up (and we have our pictures taken in folksy settings in our tanks and shorts and flip flops.)  It’s not as hot…in the evening.  Meaning that it dips below, you know, eighty.

So in this weird time, where the magazines are Read More

Lemon Lime Wedding Cake

lemonlime

Maybe this only happens to me…but I fall in love with bakers. True story.

I fall in love with them and then every single cake I see just kind of blows my mind and suddenly my palms get all sweaty and I kind of want to marry them (marry them in the way one would want to marry a baker I guess) and then I start sending them embarrassing tweets like “Hi..I love your cakes they are great.” And then I spend the next few hours checking my Twitter to see if they’ve replied back while slapping myself on the forehead and muttering Read More

Rock Candy Wedding Cake

rock candy

I’ve had this cake pinned on Pinterest for months. What kept me from posting it? Well, for a long time I had nothing but the picture and in case you haven’t noticed I like to ramble and what good is rambling if you don’t know what you’re talking about?

Even though it’s been sitting on my pin board just waiting to be published I loved it from the start. It’s a gorgeous traditional three-tiered round cake covered in flawless white fondant. As you can tell the fun doesn’t stop there. To add a little pop of color and some fun to this cake, rock candy was added to the base of each tier. That’s what you can tell from the picture. What you can’t tell just from the picture is that this cake was just a player in a fun and whimsical Read More

Massive Floral Italian Wedding Cake

Massive Italian Wedding Cake

To begin…a couple of points about this cake.

So…I don’t normally feature pictures that are obviously snapshots.  And I don’t normally feature pictures that have people in them.  But I searched and searched for a not snapshot-y, non-peopled picture of this cake, and couldn’t find one.  And this cake?  Must Be Featured.

Just look at it!  I have never, in all my days on this earth (and I won’t tell you how many of those there are) seen a cake of this scale.  In it’s own way, it’s bigger than Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s cake, and that one was pretty large.  But the depth of the layer on this cake are truly astounding.  Really, I Read More
