Button Wedding Cake

weddings-wa101750-buttoncake_vert

I’ll be the first to admit that I can barely sew a button onto a shirt, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love buttons.

There’s something about buttons – they’re cute and round and have so many more uses than just holding your coat closed.

Take for instance this wedding cake adorned with edible buttons.

It’s a rather whimsical cake and is certainly not a design that immediately comes to mind when one thinks “wedding cake.” Read More

Snowman Couple Wedding Cake

snow-man-winter-couple

After sweltering and nearly melting in last week's heat wave, I had to find a cake that made me think of cooler temps, and this super cute Snowman Couple cake is it!

I love the simplicity of the cake itself – just white frosting and some gorgeous snowflakes accented with red berries which make the whole cake just pop!

But what really made me smile were the adorable snow people standing atop the snowy white cake. Seriously – how cute are they, dressed in their snowperson wedding best? Who knew Frosty could be so handsome? Read More

How fun is this cake if you were thinking about having a Christmas in July wedding? It's kind of perfect, really.

Now I'm not sure how many people have a Christmas in July theme for their wedding, but it would be a lot of fun especially when it's a million degrees outside. Your guests could be enjoying a fun winter wonderland complete with this red, white, and pink creation.

I especially love that they've used the red and white Read More

Recipe and DIY: Southern Living 2012 White Christmas Cake

Southern Living White Cake 1

It will come as no surprise to regular readers of A Wedding Cake Blog that I am an avid Southern Living magazine fan.

The world stops once a month when an issue comes. I peruse every feature, and file away recipes for that week's menu or upcoming party, and I dream — and sometimes use — the travel advice on the pages.

So I look forward every year to the December issue, and what has come to be known as “the big white cake” on the cover.

This year's big white cake is beautiful in its simplicity, and I applaud the powers that be who chose it, because it's the perfect all purpose white cake.  Perfect for birthdays, perfect for weddings.

We've gotten so fancy, haven't we?  And there's nothing wrong with fancy.  But every good cook should have a very basic, completely perfect cake in their repertoire, and this is a good candidate for that job.

The cake — Mrs. Billett's White Cake — is done up in lovely, minimalist fashion with white buttercream and fondant snowflakes.  I was excited to share this with you because it would make a sensational winter wedding cake, and the fondant snowflakes are easy AND spectacular (which just happens to be the perfect combo IMO.)

Find the recipe here.  Find the fondant snowflake DIY here (this one's a video.)

Ah, Southern Living.  I love how fabulous you continue to be.

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round-Up for December 9, 2012

Kransekake

Hi Guys!

Aren't the holidays the best?  I mean, I know it can be hectic, trying to get everything done, all while being intentional and meaningful about every little detail.  But still, it's such a great time to gather in and just love on people.

Last night, we Read More

Deep Brown Winter Wedding Cake

Winter Wedding Cake

I thought I'd feature something a little different today.

You should know that I love the idea of a winter wedding. Actually, I think that for me, I prefer fall and winter over spring and summer anyday for a wedding. I think I love the minimalistic design elements of these seasons, and the rich, warm colors. And there's something about finding the beauty in a sparse landscape that really appeals to me.

This cake is like Read More

And So It Begins: Winter Holiday Wedding Cakes

present wedding cake-001

I figure if the big box stores are already advertising, and I’m already shopping, then it’s okay for me to start the winter holiday/Christmas-inspired cake posting…yes?  I thought you’d agree.

This one had me at Red Ribbon.  Is this not completely, totally, utterly fabulous?  What appears to be a pile of presents is, in fact, a cake.  Or a pile of cakes.  I’m not sure.

At any rate, I totally Read More

Crystal and Pink White Snowflake Cake

Crystal and Pink Snowflake Cake

I know that my friends and family in other parts of the country are rrrreeeealllyy super hoping that winter spread its last hurrah recently, when the Facebook posts about falling snow were coming thick and furious.  So to bid adieu (hopefully) to the white stuff, here’s a reminder of all that is enchanting and sparkly about it.

There’s just something about a snowflake cake!

When I saw this gorgeousness from Rachael Teufel and Company at Intricate Icings, I knew I had to feature it.  The cake was the perfect centerpiece for a breathtaking New Year’s Eve wedding in Colorado.  And those aren’t Read More

Sparkle White Wedding Cake

You had me at pate de fruit.  No.  Seriously.

Because we love love LOVE! the sweet and pretty around here, we spend an inordinate amount of time gazing at pretty cakes.  Sometimes we tire of our usual haunts and look for fresh perspective.

That’s how I found this cake and accompanying sweets table, which maybe made me jump up and down, clapping, like a little school girl.  Just a little.

I love this simple dessert table.  No, Read More

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round-Up for January 8, 2012

Ruffle cake 2

Happy New Year, Everyone!

Yes, I know that technically, I’m a full week behind.  And I know that technically, today is the Epiphany, and the end of Christmas, and not the New Year.  But is anyone else having a hard time cranking up the old machine again, getting on the horse?  I blame Read More
