Succulent and Bramble Wedding Cake

Succulent and Bramble Wedding Cake

I'm feeling all minimalist-y this morning, y'all.

I didn't think I was. I thought I was feeling all spring-in-bloom-y. But then I spied this beautiful cake, and I realized I was wrong.

Just like the beauty of the Read More

Gerbera Daisy Wedding Cake

gerbera daisy wedding cake

I'm all about rushing the seasons.  But you knew this.

Since today is March 1, clearly it's time for a post all about spring-into-summer, yes?

And what says spring-into-summer better than fresh strawberries and big, boldly colored gerbera daisies?  Right. Nothing.

What a sweet little Read More

Classic White Wedding Cake with Traditional Bride and Groom Cake Topper

Classic White Wedding Cake

I’m feeling a little — okay, a whole lot — classic today. And so my cake choice reflects that.

I love the elegant simplicity of the white buttercream wedding cake that’s trimmed with roses and topped with an uber traditional bride and groom.  It would seem that the wedding was an affair with lots of “glitzy ambiance” so this cake struck the balance between the indulgence and the simple.  And when you go with the classics, you don’t really need birds flying around the top or fireworks shooting off the sides, do you?

At the end of the day, after Read More

Basket of Roses Wedding Cake

Roses Basket Wedding Cake

I can’t help it. Blame it on living in the mild-weather southeast, but once Christmas is over, I’m on to summer and beach outings. This beautiful wedding cake, with its basket weave motif and full blown roses, shouts “Summer!” to me.

But it could also be shouting Read More

White Hydrangea Wedding Cake with Double Height Tier

White Hydrangea Wedding Cake

Hello, Dears!

Today, I’m starting to turn away from the sparse winterishness of January, and toward the ardent blush of Valentine’s Day, which is just around the corner.

Do you celebrate?  We don’t do much with it around these parts, but I love the sentiment of being sweet to everyone on V Day. It can be about romance, or you can expand the scope and make it a day to show love to all or those close to you.  Remember those fun Read More

Gold Sequined Wedding Cake

Gold wedding cake

Does anything glitter quite like gold?

This cake is, in a nutshell, drop-dead gorgeous.  It’s so luxurious, and just completely fantastic. For possibly the first time, I am saying this silly sentence: it’s too pretty to cut.

It’s not often that I’m Read More

Recipe and DIY: Southern Living 2012 White Christmas Cake

Southern Living White Cake 1

It will come as no surprise to regular readers of A Wedding Cake Blog that I am an avid Southern Living magazine fan.

The world stops once a month when an issue comes. I peruse every feature, and file away recipes for that week's menu or upcoming party, and I dream — and sometimes use — the travel advice on the pages.

So I look forward every year to the December issue, and what has come to be known as “the big white cake” on the cover.

This year's big white cake is beautiful in its simplicity, and I applaud the powers that be who chose it, because it's the perfect all purpose white cake.  Perfect for birthdays, perfect for weddings.

We've gotten so fancy, haven't we?  And there's nothing wrong with fancy.  But every good cook should have a very basic, completely perfect cake in their repertoire, and this is a good candidate for that job.

The cake — Mrs. Billett's White Cake — is done up in lovely, minimalist fashion with white buttercream and fondant snowflakes.  I was excited to share this with you because it would make a sensational winter wedding cake, and the fondant snowflakes are easy AND spectacular (which just happens to be the perfect combo IMO.)

Find the recipe here.  Find the fondant snowflake DIY here (this one's a video.)

Ah, Southern Living.  I love how fabulous you continue to be.

Let Them Eat Cake: Sunday Round-Up for December 2, 2012

Lace Wedding Cake

Oh, my lovelies goodness. The whole family was nice and sick this week.

So what should have been an extra week to plan for the Christmas season turned into a lot of staying in jammies til far past a respectable hour.  Everyone is on the upswing, though…except me, of course.  But I'll get there.  Someday.

There's not much to tell you about on the blog this week as a result, I'm afraid. Let's hope for better health soon!  Until then, let's recap some Read More

And So It Begins: Winter Holiday Wedding Cakes

present wedding cake-001

I figure if the big box stores are already advertising, and I’m already shopping, then it’s okay for me to start the winter holiday/Christmas-inspired cake posting…yes?  I thought you’d agree.

This one had me at Red Ribbon.  Is this not completely, totally, utterly fabulous?  What appears to be a pile of presents is, in fact, a cake.  Or a pile of cakes.  I’m not sure.

At any rate, I totally Read More

Cream Colored Rustic Buttercream Wedding Cake

white rustic wedding cake

I was in the mood for simple today. Maybe it's because life seems so fast and so complicated. So I went in search of simplicity, and this is what I found. If life can't be simple today, my choice of cake sure can be!

Remember all those times that you helped to frost those cakes, and Mom or Grandma took extra care to make the frosting all loopy and swoopy before calling it a done deal for the Read More
